The job has many aspects – replacing damaged timbers, fixing leaking roofs, replacing faulty electricals and adding new lights & switches, removing & replacing plumbing, and a fair bit of painting.
Upon arrival, first thing to do was a detailed assessment of the site. Fortunately we’d been well prepared with the assistance of local leader Marcus, through Marcus’s mate and YFC leader Dave White.
Dave had organised a ute full of tools, plus a tandem-trailer load of building materials, just to get started. Also, local builder Joe new much of the site in detail, and had also organised suppliers to courier additional materials overnight from Gisborne, 120 km to the south.
So, as soon as we had been officially welcomed to the Marae and had some dinner, the team, led by Terry, set about working out what was going to be done, and what would be needed, in the first couple of days.
